Spiced Mulled Wine for Spring Storms

It's been an unseasonably cold spring across the country, and in California with bomb cyclones and atmospheric rivers, it's been dangerous and cold! For National Cocktail Day we're bringing you a new take on a classic, Mulled Wine.
Ingredients:
  • 10 whole cloves

  • 4 whole star anise

  • 3 cinnamon sticks

  • 1/2 of a whole nutmeg, smashed

  • 1 bottle Pinot Noir

  • 2 (6- x 1-inch) orange peel strips

  • 1 vanilla bean pod, halved lengthwise

  • 1 ounce pure maple syrup

  • 1 ounce honey

Directions:

  • Toast spices in a large saucepan over low heat for about 5 minutes.
  • Add wine, orange slices, vanilla, maple syrup, and honey. Simmer for 15-20 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and allow mixture to steep for 30 minutes.
  • Strain liquid and pour into glasses. Top with 1.5 ounces of Applejack brandy if desired.
